Words I like, orchard ladders and crush blocks

Persillade: French parsley sauce.

Orchard ladder: A tripod ladder, stable on uneven ground.

Crush block: If someone falls into a canal lock while there is a barge transiting the lock, you could throw this sturdily-built metal box into the water so that the vessel doesn’t crush the swimmer. (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.)

Packout: In U.S. Foreign Service usage, the chaotic day (or two days, or three days) when contract movers arrive to put a diplomatic family’s goods and chattels into boxes, in preparation for shipment overseas or back to the States.

Fall zone: In playground design, the area away from a play structure that must be covered in a soft material so as to break a child’s fall. Now much wider than in the 1980s.

Highwater: Housing type in Sacramento, Calif., raised above flood elevation.

Paster: A slip of paper carrying an update, issued by the Sanborn company for its fire insurance maps. Sanborn maps might have an ambiguous data spanning 50 years because they could have been updated using pasters, and it is useful to see Sanborns in person (or at least in a high-resolution scan) so as to understand the sequence of corrections.
