Search sites
- Google image search (search for a term, look under search tools, and filter by usage rights)
- Bing image search (search for a term, then filter by license)

- Flickr Advanced Search (check the “Search within Creative Commons” and “Find content to modify, adapt, or build upon” boxes)
- Unsplash publishes free, high-quality, relatively less generic stock images
- Getty Trust Open Content Images
- Wellcome Library
- British Library Mechanical Curator with one million public domain images
- Wikimedia Commons
- Public Domain Review
- New York Public Library Digital Collections includes public-domain images
- Internet Archive (esp. for texts and audio)
- The Science Museum Group
- Work created by a US Government employee, for the government, is almost always in the public domain.
